MOROCCO
Mixed Media on Paper | 2017, 2024
In 2017, my husband and I traveled with friends to visit our son, who was spending the summer interning in Morocco. I carried a small notebook, paints and pens, and collected scraps of paper along the way. I wanted to document the trip through art journaling as we traveled by train from Casablanca to Fez and Marrakesh.
The two larger pieces came years later, as I revisited memories of the colors, patterns, clothing, architecture, and people we encountered. One of our most memorable evenings was at a restaurant, where we unexpectedly watched a twirling dervish perform. Later that week, we somehow wandered into a wedding reception.
These pieces take me back to a country that, in my memory, still feels like one of the most magical places on earth.
